Responsibilities of Citizenship

Used in RNC Speech

“Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I… come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.” -1 And, at the Republican National Convention, we heard: “Friends, delegates and fellow Americans: I…”

The words about the Roman issues portray the overthrow of the political state of the Roman Empire. With last night’s words, what is Mr. Trump attempting to overthrow?

The Steppingstones doesn’t normally enter into the political arena, but this is not a time to be still and watch how things play out. Every American, every Christian, each person regardless of race, color or creed in this country, must sit up and take notice. This is not a time to play politics. This is not a time to sit back and see what unfolds. This is not a time to do nothing. Democracy is not being played out here, but rather there is a play on democracy. If we are sincere in our love of democracy, then we must be part of the solution, we must do what our conscience requires.

If we sit back, look on and play the “wait and see” game, we just might find ourselves under a totally different form of government in a few years. Hitler’s Germany started out in very much the same way. Apathy among the citizens and the leaders of the time, allowed the dictator to wrest control and lead the German nation down avenues it would later despise. The whole concept of democracy is that “We the people” strive to act to make things right. We don’t throw up our hands in a “what’s the use?” way and let events flow from a few mouths. If that is how you feel, then recognize that you, too, are part of the problem. Democracy was and is a work in progress, for all of us.

We have many areas to address, many wrongs to correct. But to sit back and watch from the sidelines to see what happens is an extremely dangerous game. “The British are coming”, that was the call to arms, back in the 1770’s. But imagine where we would be if, the people in the room, looked up from what they were doing, looked around the room, saw no one else moving, so they went back to reading their book. You cannot, WE cannot adopt this attitude. We cannot afford to.

Please, I implore you, take a stand. Become active. Look at the persons who desire to lead our nation. What solutions do they offer to us? What part of their background will be beneficial to the United States? Which peoples will benefit most from their leadership? Are all peoples going to benefit equally? Are the solutions that are offered, by your candidate, geared for each audience, or just those that are in attendance, at that particular time? We must learn to ask questions. Read, even if you don’t have time to! How are we to learn and grow, if we do nothing? How do we get the best leader we can…if we do nothing?

Why should we become involved? What good will it do? “You can’t change city hall”, is a famous fall back line. Stop for a moment and think about our beliefs. Are we to just pass by, when we see someone needing help? Are we to pass it off as: “It’s none of my business”? Do you think God gave us a mind, an intellect, a conscience so that we can just shrug our shoulders and do nothing? You are called. We are called to get involved. If each one of us does one thing that prompts someone else to do one thing, then we are getting our message out to the world.

One thing that you can do is to forward this post to all that are in your email contacts. ((If you do, PLEASE remember to put the email address in the Bcc.. area. This will prevent anyone else from seeing your friends’ addresses.)) The forwarding, of itself, is not the important part, but rather getting people to think about the consequences of their action/non action. Not knowing what else to do, I am sending these thoughts and concerns to you to pass on. If you feel there is merit in this article, please help in reaching as many voters, as possible. Thank you.

Fatima and Its’ Secret

Just after midday on Sunday 13 October 1917, between 30,000 and 100,000 people (estimated to be 70,000) witnessed the miracle of the sun. Newspapers the next day reported the wondrous event, as factual and being witnessed by Christians and non-Christians alike. Most of my remarks which follow, are quotes taken from knowledgeable publications which will be indicated appropriately. My hope is that each of us begins to see the reality and love of God. The miracle of the sun was the first time, since the birth of Christ that God intervened publicly in behalf of mankind. Why then? Why at this point in history? These are valid questions. Ones that we, all, need to reflect on, pray over and, in no small way, make changes in our way of living.

The first two parts of the “Secret of Fatima” had been revealed earlier in the year of 1917. The first secret showing souls suffering unimaginable torments crying out in anguish, in hell. In the second Mary urged, “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace”. -1 Translation presented by Sister Lucia in the “Third Memoir” of August, 31, 1941 for the Bishop of Leiria-Fatima.

The Third secret, revealed later (July 13, 1917), is translated:

I write in obedience to you, my God, who command me to do so through his Excellency the Bishop of Leiria and through your Most Holy Mother and mine.

After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!’. And we saw in an immense light that is God: ‘something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it’ a Bishop dressed in White ‘we had the impression that it was the Holy Father’. Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions. Beneath the two arms of the Cross there were two Angels each with a crystal aspersorium in his hand, in which they gathered up the blood of the Martyrs and with it sprinkled the souls that were making their way to God. -2 Translation of “The Third Part of the Secret”.

We saw in the first two secrets the key thought being the salvation of souls destined for hell. This third part is crying out to all of us: “Penance, Penance, Penance.”

Let’s look more closely at the following images. The angel with the flaming sword represents the threat of judgment which hovers over the world. A world consumed by fire is no longer considered impossible or pure fantasy. Man, with his own creativity, has forged that flaming sword. The vision then shows the splendor of the Mother of God as the sole power which stands opposed to the force of this destruction. The avenging angel, as though temporarily restrained, summons the world to do penance. The importance of human freedom is underlined: the future is not cast in concrete. Indeed, the whole point of the vision is to bring mankind’s free will onto the scene and to steer freedom in a positive direction. The vision speaks of dangers and how we might be saved from them.

One other famous expression of the “secret” is: “my Immaculate Heart will triumph”. It is these words that we must allow to awaken our slumbering souls. What devotion to Mary do we have? Do we run to her as we would our worldly mother? Do we trust her? She has continually begged us to pray her rosary, to trust her, to seek her motherly love. The words of St. John Paul II probably say it best. “Thanks to St. Louis of Montfort, I came to understand that true devotion to the Mother of God is actually Christocentric, indeed, it is very profoundly rooted in the Mystery of the Blessed Trinity, and the Mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption”. -3 His Holiness John Paul II “Crossing the Threshold of Hope”. He chose to dedicate his life, his papacy, to Mary. In consecrating himself to Mary, he entrusted his entire life to her, so that she could best apply it to the interests of her Son, Jesus Christ.

We read something like this and we can think, “Oh brother”, or “That’s not for me”, or maybe, “I have too many other things to do”. We can think up so many seemingly reasonable excuses. But if we analyze each of them, don’t we just come to the real meaning behind each statement, which is: “That is too much trouble”? “I have a life to live”. “I have things to do”. “I have mouths to feed”. “I need to grow”. We are destroying our own human nature and corrupting it with worldly rationalizations.

We are on this earth for ONE reason, only. We are to find our way BACK to our Creator. He breathed in us a soul, the only spiritual aspect of our being. That soul, paraphrasing St. Augustine: “Our soul is restless, until it rests back with You.” Meanwhile, we seek out worldly goods, pleasures, comforts as if they will calm the restlessness inside each of us. They don’t, but we persist in our search for happiness. As we continue that search for happiness, we ignore the one burning sensation in each of us, the blissful re-union with our God.
